Christmas shopping. A task that few look forward to. Hurrying through a loud and crowded mall is not how I want to spend my Saturday afternoons leading up to the holidays. My ideal type of Christmas shopping would be from local, handmade artisans, while sipping a refreshing local beer and being serenaded by my favorite local bands.

If you haven't heard, the ideal situation exists! It's called the Rock & Shop Market. Rock & Shop is being held at Durham's own Fullsteam Brewery this year. It will be on December 4th from 12-6 and Flutter will be there jamming out to some of the best local music and feasting on the best selection of local food.

I believe I may have found my new favorite artist today. Grant Hamilton captures colors with a Polaroid camera unlike anything I've seen. I'm a sucker for some Mark Rothko, and I find Hamilton's photographs equally as inspiring. I love color field paintings because of the inexplicable feelings they evoke; it's like looking at an emotion. And somehow, looking at these Polaroid photographs on my computer monitor, I am filled with the same excitement I feel when I am standing in front of a Morris Louis painting at the NCMA. Discovering these photographs at the end of a wonderful day at work, while listening to some feel-good music, as I patiently wait for my lovely man-friend to come home to me.... best Tuesday in a long time.

Website, round two!

So Emily and I are not technology people. That being said, you should check out our updated website. It's pretty darn good for people who don't have a lot of experience with creating websites! Any feedback is always welcome on how to make it more user friendly. We currently have the purchasing page set up to link our etsy shop. This week we will add more items for sale in our shop and will keep it stocked from here on. Hopefully sooner than we are planning for, we will have our website set up with a shopping option. Less clicking for you, more sales for us!

We couldn't have asked for better weather this weekend! Saturday was tons of fun with all the artSPARK chalk artists running amok, smeared with pastel war paint. It was a weekend full of creative energy and great artists and designers, of course. Some of our favorites: Liz Bradford, Haden Designs, Raleigh Denim, LLLavendar... just to name a few.

Up next for us, Morning Times Market. October 1st, outside of Raleigh Times and Morning Times on Hargett Street. Come by and check it out!

Wisdom from Grandma

My grandma died almost two months ago, and the week before, she gave me some valuable advice. She said, "Work hard, but not too hard." What she meant by this is to work hard enough to make a living, but still allow yourself to have fun.

I got an email from my aunt today with a picture attached. She found it when she was going through Grandma's photos. I thought I would post it to inspire all of us to keep having fun.

Upcoming Late-Summer Events!

Wow! This summer has been sooooo busy, just like summer always is. From burgers on the grill, to sun-bathing, to celebratory glasses of champagne, we have really been having tons of fun. But, we are making sure to balance work and play.

We are super excited to announce that we have three shows coming up in the next two months! Liz Niemeyer has organized the Morning Times Market, which Flutter will be participating in the first Friday of August and the first Friday of September. We have also been accepted into Raleigh's 5th annual SPARKcon. Flutter will be a part of bazaarSPARK which will be held on Saturday, September 18th.

With lots to do in the next several weeks, it's time to turn on Pandora and hoard our favorite snacks into the underground studio of hibernation. Betty, Sheila, White, and Peggy. . . get to work!

2010 Pantone Color of the Year! Oh Turquoise. What a funny name for such a wonderful color.

We're pumped that our near and dear friend, Christine Beauchamp will be joining us for a 12 week Business Internship. She's worked hard to graduate with a Master's in Global Innovation Management from NCSU, and will be spending the rest of her summer with us! Hooray!

Thank you to everyone who came out to see us at the Handmade Market! We loved seeing each and every one of you, and appreciate your support. After months of setting up Flutter, yesterday's turn out was a confirmation that our hard work and preparation was all worth it. Of course we've enjoyed every moment along the way (maybe not the moments after midnight), and look forward to the next phase of flutter production.

Final days before The Handmade Market

Here we are with five days until our debut at The Handmade Market. First, I would like to say how excited we are that after our last full day of production together, we were able to wrap up our work and still make it to pilates! That means we weren't pulling our hair out at five o'clock screaming at our sewing machines and wondering where in the world all our time went.

In the last few months and even weeks, we've learned a lot about ourselves and about being your own bosses. We still have a lot to learn about becoming a business, but during this crazy transition in our lives the most valuable lesson learned thus far has been to be good to yourself. That includes not only working hard, but prioritizing time for ourselves and those we love and care about. And because we have worked so hard on production, tonight we can actually enjoy an evening with the wonderful people who have supported us unconditionally!

Six weeks until The Handmade Market. Market bags are assembled and ready for printing. Lots of iPod holders are cut and ready to be sewn. One big shopping trip to the fabric store down, many hours of production to go.

I think we're on track with producing inventory, if only I could get this blasted website thing to work!

Handmade Market, here we come!

We are very excited to announce that on May 1st we will be participating as a vendor in The Handmade Market! May feels like it's far off, but we have lots of things on our to-do list. Thankfully we're on schedule for our overall monthly goals and have already relocated and set up our studio. So bring on the quick and easy hot dogs, the oh-so-tasty coffee and the hum of sewing machines late into the night! (and a heads up to our ever-supportive and loving boyfriends)
